COLONIE-The former chief financial officer for the New York State Nurses Association who allegedly embezzled more than $1 million from the organization over the past four years has been indicted by a grand jury.
The state's largest nursing group has an annual budget of about $29 million.
John Daley, 46, of Latham, has been charged with first degree grand larceny for
allegedly forging 127 checks during the past four years and then intercepting bank statements, removing copies of the checks made payable to himself and reconciling the statements.
The indictment charges that Daly stole more than $1 million between Jan. 1, 2002, and May 30, 2006. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
Prosecutors said although the association was audited annually, no money was shown to be missing and bank personnel didn't find the checks that Daley had allegedly forged. When the association's accounting staff found the problem in June when trying to locate a cancelled check, Daley was fired and the matter referred for prosecution.
The group, which represents nurses in New York and New Jersey facilities,, has about 34,000 members and has offices in Latham.
Daley had worked for the association for about five years. 11-24-06
