CLEARWATER, FLA---When Michael Schiavo, a nursing supervisor at the Pinellas County Jail, decided to cause the death of his wife by denying her food and water for 13 days, the Pinellas County Court and Judge George W. Greer sanctioned it and railed against all attempts to save the disabled woman's life.
On Wednesday, Pinellas sheriff's officers arrested a man on four counts of animal cruelty for withholding food and water from four dogs.
Donald H. Bryant, 54, was charged after two standard poodles and a giant schnauzer were found dead in cages three weeks ago and it was suspected that they had been left alone for long periods of time without nutrition and hydration. A third standard poodle was found alive but was 20 pounds underweight and covered in feces.
The house was owned by Gary Nolan, 67, who has been staying in New Orleans since August. He told police he had been allowing his nephew, Bryant to stay there.
Bryant was reportedly a dog groomer and was supposed to be dog sitting the championship dogs.
When Bryant returned to the house, he was arrested. He was released from jail after posting $40,000 bail.
The officials found the animals after a neighbor reporting a stench coming from the house and a meter reader said he saw an abundance of flies inside the house when he had knocked on the door.
Neighbors said that they had seen Bryant at the house in late September and not again until he returned on Nov. 7 to retrieve belongings.
