Editor, The North Country Gazette:
Having a parent in prison is so sad, especially at holiday time.
Once again we are providing some holiday cheer for Capital-area
children of NYS prisoners and once again, we will be focusing on
adolescents --those who are closest in age to perhaps going to prison
themselves and who will be least likely to receive a gift if their
family has to make a choice between them and younger children.
I am a little late this year because one month ago, my husband, Jay came
home after 25 years in prison. Our wonderful reunion has served as yet
another reminder of the profound effects of prison on children and
families.
Last year we gave dozens of young people gift certificates to
Crossgates and CVS as well as bags of personal care items and candy,
sweatshirts, teddy bears, books and other gifts. These young people
came to our attention via incarcerated parents, school social workers
and other community contacts and we give them gifts Just Because they
have incarcerated parents.
We also have a few families with adolescent and younger children--in
need of holiday adoption.
This year we will do the same if you can help us with a donation of a
gift certificate (or cash for same) or a gift of your choosing. We know
there are many community needs this holiday season. If this one speaks
to you, please contact me. These are our children.
Once again, thank you from Prison Families of New York and all prison
families.
We are a not-for-profit agency. There are many ways you can help us
year-round. Thanks again!
