NEW YORK----Joel Krupnik and Mildred Castellanos decked the front yard of their Manhattan mansion before Christmas with a blood-spattered, five-foot tall, knife-wielding Santa Claus and a tree full of decapitated Barbie dolls.
A decapitated dolls' head with phony blood oozing from the eye sockets was held by the red-suited icon of good who was partially hidden behind a tree in the yard of the couple's property.
Now that Christmas is over, the couple is offering the unqiue "decoration" for sale to the highest bidder.
Krupnik said he had already received a $200 bid. According to a sign placed next to the display, auction proceeds will go to the favorite charity of the highest bidder.
The display was a statement about the commercialization and secularization of Christmas, Krupnik said. He says that while Christmas has religious origins, Santa doesn't. He said that St. Nick "is not in the Bible. He's not a religious symbol".
The couple's 16-year-old daughter says the display was her idea, based on a scene in the movie "Silent Night, Deadly Night". 12-26-05
