ST. PETERSBURG, FLA---Hospitalized for nearly six weeks after suffering several mild strokes in mid-December , Robert Schindler Sr. (left), father of Terri Schindler Schiavo (right), has returned home.
Bob told The North Country Gazette Thursday night that his right side is still impaired but he's regaining his strength and mobility. He will be continuing outpatient therapy and said he was ecstatic to be home.
He had spent several weeks in the intensive care unit after being stricken at home the weekend of Dec. 16. He suffered a second stroke in the hospital days after admission.
His cognitive function was unaffected and although initially his speech was slurred, he has recovered with therapy. His sense of humor is intact.
He said he was overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and well wishes from people around the country and expressed his gratitude.
Bob's long-term prognosis is excellent and doctors are optimistic that he will fully recover.
Bob's daughter, Terri, died March 31, 2005, two weeks after her feeding tube was removed by court order at the behest of her guardian, Michael Schiavo. Terri left no living will but Schiavo claimed that she had said she had expressed her wishes years previous although it took him over eight years to remember. The Schindlers disputed his claim and fought Schiavo in the courts for nearly a decade, saying Terri had a strong will to live.
Get well wishes can be sent to Bob in care of the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation, 5562 Central Ave., Suite 2, St. Petersburg, FL 33707. 1-25-07
