Phish Frontman Indicted On Felony Drug Charge

WHITEHALL---Trey Anastasio, former lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Phish, has reportedly been indicted by a Washington County grand jury for felony drug possession.

Ernest J. "Trey" ANastasio, 42, of Richmond, Vt., was arrested in the village of Whitehall in December and charged with driving while under the influence of drugs, driving with a suspended license and possession of prescription drugs which were not in a labeled container. The drugs included hydrocodone, Percocet Xanax.

Police had seized a small packet of a black substance which they found in Anastasio's car. He had told them it was hashish but when police sent the drugs for lab analysis, they learned that the substance was heroin.

Anastasio pleaded not guilty at his initial arraignment before village justice William Redmond where he appeared with attorney Brendan Tulley.in early January.

No arraignment has yet been scheduled on the felony charge.

Anastasio had been stopped by Patrolman Andrew Mija about 3:30 a.m. Dec.15. Mija. who said he pulled the musician over for driving to the left of the double yellow line on Poultney Street.

Anastasio had failed field sobriety tests and was allegedly in possession of a bottle which contained about 60 pills of three different drugs, two of them painkillers for which he did not have a prescription. It was found that he was driving with a suspended New York driver's license as the result of an outstanding speeding ticket from 1998 in the Town of Chester Court.

According to police, Anastasio said he had smoked hashish and taken prescription drugs before being stopped by Mija. He said he was on his way to Burlington, Vt. 2-2-07
