Police: Nurse Took Drugs From Nursing Home

COLONIE---A licensed practical nurse at the Albany County nursing home has been charged with stealing more than 1,000 hydrocodone pills from the facility where she had worked since September 2004.

Police said Soynette Somerville, 38, of Prospect St., Schenectady, stole the painkillers for her own addiction and that she destroyed records at the nursing home in order to try and hide the thefts.

She faces charges of tampering with business records, a felony and petty larceny, a misdemeanor.

When the nursing home staff found they didn't have enough medication on hand to fill a resident's prescription for the drug, they began an investigation because the prescription wasn't due to be refilled.

Upon investigation, the nursing home staff discovered that narcotics tracking reports were missing and they contacted the Albany County Sheriff's Department. Police said that Somerville has admitted to taking as many as 16 pills a day to feed her habit and destroying the records. 2-15-07
