National Guardsman Allegedly Abused Cadet

PLATTSBURGH---A National Guardsman has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy.

Donald McCarthy Jr., 38, of Champlain, a member of the volunteer cadre at the Army National Guard at the Morrisonville armory, met the boy through the Corps of Cadets, a free New York Army National Guard program for children ages 10 to 17 that focuses on anti-drugs and life training in a regimented environment.

State Police said that McCarthy befriended the alleged victim who was a corps member, engaging in sexual contact with him and allegedly filming the abuse during the summer of 2006.

The alleged victim, now 13, reportedly filed a complaint with State Police prompting an investigation.

McCarthy has been charged with second degree criminal sexual act, promoting a sexual performance of a child, second degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

He is free on $2,500 bond. 2-17-07
