Child Struck By Frozen Meat In Coma

ELMIRA---A 25-year-old man, angry because his dinner wasn't ready, is facing charges of assault and reckless endangerment after striking his girlfriend's five-year-old daughter in the head with a piece of frozen meat.

Kenneth Groves opened the freezer and began throwing food items about 5:30 last Tuesday.

The girl was standing in another room and was struck in the forehead. She suffered a fractured skull and subdural hematoma. The hematoma was removed and the little girl remains in critical but stable condition at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center after being placed in a medically-induced coma.

Groves is in Chemung County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Elmira City Court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. 2-18-07
