SUFFOLK COUNTY---A New York State parks employee has been arraigned in First District Court for buying construction material with government funds and later reselling the merchandise and pocketing the cash.
In 2005 and 2006 Gilbert Knowles, 49, of 165 Montauk Highway in East Islip, allegedly purchased 260 feet of copper flashing from East Islip Lumber and instructed the dealer to bill the New York State Parks account. Knowles is employed as a carpenter for the Long Island parks regional maintenance crew.
Knowles was arrested by state park police and was arraigned Wednesday before District Court Judge Gerard Asher. He is charged with one count of fourth degree grand larceny, three counts of falsifying business records in the first degree and two counts of petty larceny.
After pleading not guilty, the defendant was released on his own recognizance.
According to parks police, the amount of the theft is $2,433.01. 2-21-07
