WHITEHALL---Trey Anastasio, former lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Phish, is expected to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon in Washington County Court in Fort Edward on a indictment charging him with felony and misdemeanor counts of drug possession.
Ernest J. "Trey" Anastasio, 42, of Richmond, Vt., was arrested in the village of Whitehall in December and charged with driving while under the influence of drugs, driving with a suspended license and possession of prescription drugs which were not in a labeled container. The drugs included hydrocodone, Percocet Xanax.
Anastasio is being represented by Albany attorney Stephen Coffey. Sources have indicated that the rock singer may enter a guilty plea as part of an agreement which could spare him jail time.
Police had seized a small packet of a black substance which they found in Anastasio's car. He had told them it was hashish but when police sent the drugs for lab analysis, they learned that the substance was heroin.
Anastasio pleaded not guilty at his initial arraignment before village justice William Redmond where he appeared with attorney Brendan Tulley in early January.
According to police records, Anastasio told Whitehall Police he had a "problem" with drugs.
It's likely that as part of any plea agreement Anastasio would be required to enter and successfully complete a drug treatment program. 2-24-07
