Ex-Phish Singer Free Pending Pre-Plea Investigation

FORT EDWARD---Former Phish frontman Trey Anastasio pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Washington County Court to multiple charges including felony and misdemeanor counts of drug possession resulting from a traffic stop in the Village of Whitehall in December.

Anastasio, 42, of New York City and Richmond, Vt., could face up to 14 years in prison if convicted and sentenced to the maximum in the seven count indictment. He's charged with three felony counts of illegally possessing prescription painkillers and driving while impaired along with misdemeanor counts of heroin possession and possession of prescription drugs which had been prescribed to someone else.

Represented by Albany attorney Steve Coffey, Anastasio's case has been adjourned until March 27. He remains free on bail. A "pre-plea" investigation will be conducted.

Coffey acknowledged that Anastasio has a drug problem and is seeking treatment. He said that the singer hopes to avoid jail time and get on with his life.

According to police records, Anastasio had told Whitehall police when arrested in December that he had a problem with drugs. 2-27-07
