Address Changes In Effect
Posted on Saturday, 15 of March , 2008 at 7:27 pm
Effective March 15, the business and personal e-mail addresses of The North Country Gazette and its publisher have been changed as part of an ongoing criminal investigation of an individual related to identity theft, internet harassment and misappropriation as well as hacking, spam and abuse.
Personal contacts and individuals who routinely do business with the NCG and are currently listed in the publisher’s personal address book will automatically be provided a new contact address.
New subscribers to the NCG Daily Digest will be provided contact information for The North Country Gazette upon registration. Current subscribers will be provided the new contact information directly. A new contact address for the newspaper will be provided to non-subscribers for letters to editor, news tips, etc. in the near future.
Anonymous internet harassment is a federal crime. The Communications Act of 1934 criminalizes anonymous harassment by a telecommunications device and Congress later amended the law to criminalize anonymous harassment via the Internet.
In 2006, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing one’s true identity. Under federal law when you annoy someone on the Internet, you must disclose your identity.
The Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005 provides that “Whoever…utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet… without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person…who receives the communications…shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.” 3-16-08
